Figuring Out Your Garage Door Dimensions

If you’re replacing your current garage door, it’s absolutely vital that your new door is the right size! While most garage doors come in standard sizes, some garages might require custom garage door installation due to a non-standard garage door size.

These are the most common garage door dimensions (note that when buying garage doors, garage door sizes are listed width first):

Single-Car Garage Doors

Single-car garage doors usually come in the following standard sizes:

  • 8 x 7 ft. garage doors
  • 8 x 8 ft. garage doors
  • 9 x 7 ft. garage doors
  • 9 x 8 ft. garage doors
  • 10 x 7 ft. garage doors
  • 10 x 8 ft. garage doors

Double-Car Garage Doors

Double-car garage doors usually come in the following standard sizes:

  • 12 x 7 ft. garage doors
  • 12 x 8 ft. garage doors
  • 14 x 7 ft. garage doors
  • 14 x 8 ft. garage doors
  • 16 x 7 ft. garage doors
  • 16 x 8 ft. garage doors
  • 18 x 7 ft. garage doors
  • 18 x 8 ft. garage doors

Should You Have Your Garage Door Professionally Sized?

You certainly don’t need to have your garage door professionally sized, particularly if you’ve replaced your garage door before and are familiar with the dimensions of your garage door.

If you don’t have experience replacing your garage door, however, we’d hate to see you purchase the wrong size door! Also, there’s more to consider than just the door itself. You also have to consider what size opener you will need based on your garage door dimensions and several other factors.

All of the above measurements are necessary for installing your new garage door. Ultimately, the most accurate measurements will come from an experienced, garage door professional.
